WHAT IT'S FOR

The purpose of Library Accessibility is to help library workers make their spaces and services friendlier and easier to use, especially for people who face barriers to using the library. The site takes a broad view of who might experience those barriers, addressing not just access for people with physical disabilities, but also access for people with cognitive disabilities, people who speak a minority language, and people who, for social or historical reasons, might reasonably expect the library to be designed without their needs in mind, such as members of the LGBTQA community and people of color.

HOW IT WORKS

The site has two pages of content, Main and Blog. On the main page, tips and exercises to help you make your library more accessible are posted each week. On the blog, the author shares her experiences with trying to implement the tips from the main page, letting you know what she learned and what challenges she encountered.

CONTRIBUTING

Suggestions for tips and guest blog posts are welcomed with gratitude. You can send either one via the Submit page.

WHO IT'S WRITTEN BY

Library Accessibility is a project of public librarian Emma Olmstead-Rumsey. Emma is currently employed as Library Operations Supervisor for Technology and Business Operatons with the Irving Public Library, but this work is her own and does not reflect the opinions or official position of the Irving Public Library or the City of Irving. Emma can be reached via the Submit page or at erumstead at gmail dot com.

COMMENT POLICY

Constructive criticism and corrections are emphatically requested. The author is aware that she is a profoundly privileged person writing about how to make the library better for people who aren't, and thus is sure to make mistakes, some of them probably egregious. If you choose to contribute to the site, please be prepared to have your contributions similarly reviewed.
